Las Vegas (AP) The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will begin opening the Las Vegas Convention Center by 2021, the city’s new chief said Monday.
The project will include the world-renowned Sands Expo Center and the hotel-casino complex, said Police Chief Michael Meehan.
The city opened the Sands Expo Centre in January 2017, which was renamed the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino after a mass shooting there.
The new Las Vegas convention center is a key component of the project.
The convention center was originally slated to open in 2018, but it was delayed by the deadly Las Vegas mass shooting in December 2017 that left 58 people dead.
The Las Angeles County Convention and Visitors Authority is also building the convention center, which is being billed as the largest and most sophisticated hotel in the world.
The site will be known as the Las Venetian Las Vegas, after the Las Caballeros, a Spanish tribe that live on the area, and is the first of three Las Vegas hotels to open.
Meehan told reporters that the convention building is being built in phases, starting with the convention hall, which will be about 4,000 square feet and will be surrounded by parking.
He declined to say when the hotel might open.
He said the new hotel will have a capacity of 8,000.
Meeshan did not offer any details about how much the hotel will cost.
He said the hotel would include a 24-hour casino.
