With only 10 months to go until the wine industry’s centennial, Villa Montallero Winery, owned by former California Governor and former President Vicente Fox, has won the prestigious Panchos Villa Death wine competition.
The winery took home the $5,000 prize during a live-streamed event from Villa Montalfonita Winery in Panchoan, Spain, on Sunday, November 22.
Villa Montaltos winery also won $2,000 for its “Pancho Vodka” win, which is a collaboration between Fox and his son, former San Diego Chargers linebacker Brandon.
The Panchovans Villa Montals winery will also receive $2 million in prize money, with the winner receiving the winnings from a future winery sale.
Fox was a fierce critic of the Obama administration during his two terms as governor of California, including his attempts to pass an anti-immigrant law known as SB 1070, which would have denied undocumented immigrants in the state a path to citizenship.
The law passed by the state legislature in 2015 and became law in January 2017.
